INTERPOL Working Groups @ INTERPOL World 2019

The following INTERPOL Working Groups are meetings that seek to empower law enforcement agencies with useful data and tools in areas of innovation, artificial intelligence, drones and darknet cryptocurrencies.
By invitation only

1. 2nd INTERPOL Chief Innovation Officers Expert Exchange
Date     : 2-3 July 2019
Venue  : Marina Bay Sands, Level 3, Begonia 3102

Innovation can be found in a product, service or process that adds value to an organization. For law enforcement, using innovative approaches means finding new ways to fight crime, increase case closure rates, enhance organizational procedures, and engage with industry, academia and the public. However, it is important to note that generating ideas is only the first step; innovation needs to be implemented carefully, targeting strategic planning, technology, partnerships and legislation. Building on the success of its 1st edition, the 2nd INTERPOL Chief Innovation Officers Expert Meeting aims to strengthen the current global network of chief innovation officers in law enforcement, continue the global dialogue on innovation, and offer a platform to present new national and international examples of innovation in policing. The expert meeting also intends to further develop the INTERPOL Innovation Centre’s main knowledge- sharing platform on police technology and innovation, the INTERPOL Police Innovation and Technology Radar.

2. 3rd INTERPOL Darknet and Cryptocurrencies Working Group meeting, co-hosted by the Bavarian Ministry of Justice
Date     : 2-3 July 2019
Venue  : Marina Bay Sands, Level 3, Begonia 3002

De-anonymization and Attribution on Darknet and Cryptocurrencies
Previous meetings of the INTERPOL Working Group on Darknet and Cryptocurrencies analysed the gaps and challenges faced by law enforcement regarding crimes facilitated by the Darknet and cryptocurrencies, highlighting Altcoin tracing tools and de-anonymization techniques as some of the most critical and developing a study on best practices for Altcoin investigations. The third meeting of the INTERPOL Darknet and Cryptocurrencies Working Group will address the gap of de-anonymization and attribution, to provide investigators with practical insights on how to attribute criminal activities related to the Darknet and cryptocurrencies to specific individuals. The goal is to conduct an empirical study on the strategies, methodologies and tools in existence for the de-anonymization of criminal actors that leverage the inherited anonymity of cryptocurrencies and the Darknet. The intention is to develop an analytical document outlining best practices of de-anonymization methodologies and strategies used by law enforcement around the globe for disseminated to INTERPOL’s member countries. Topics that will potentially be discussed during the two-day working group meeting include OSINT, linking Bitcoin addresses to exchanges and markets / clustering, de-mixing services, web-crawling, data-mapping, offensive-security and exploits.

3. 3rd INTERPOL Drone Expert Forum
Date     : 3-4 July 2019
Venue  : Marina Bay Sands, Level 3, Cassia 3301A

The use of drone technology is rapidly expanding on a worldwide basis. Law enforcement use of drones is changing the face of policing and its associated services such as surveillance, disaster response, mapping, search and rescue, and remote patrols. As this area expands, new challenges and obstacles arise which law enforcement need to understand and overcome. The 3rd INTERPOL Drone Expert Forum looks to expand on last year’s conference. Prominent industry and law enforcement agencies that have already adopted drones and associated technology such as machine learning and artificial intelligence will help law enforcement to understand the issues and solutions that are currently available, enabling other agencies to avoid facing the same challenges. Key topics will address areas of concern such as the latest regulations, in-depth challenges and solutions, case studies, as well as how drone technology can facilitate and improve the operational policing of today as well as the latest use of drones by criminals.

4. 2nd INTERPOL-UNICRI Global Meeting on Artificial Intelligence for Law Enforcement
Date     : 3-4 July 2019
Venue  : Marina Bay Sands, Level 3, Cassia 3201A

In today’s technology and data-driven society, the exponential increase in both sources and volumes of unstructured data generated in even routine criminal cases challenges police forces worldwide. Intelligence analysis is a central function of law enforcement and a critical resource for enabling effective and efficient investigations. Large amounts of unstructured information are, however, not inherently useful and may even harm operational and strategic decision making in time sensitive situations. During the 1st INTERPOL-UNICRI global meeting, Artificial Intelligence and machine learning emerged as the most sought-after solutions by law enforcement, as they can provide a wide range of opportunities to support police work. The 2nd INTERPOL-UNICRI global meeting will seek to delve deeper into the wide range of opportunities AI and machine learning present for law enforcement, in particular for capturing and evaluating data to support police investigations, operations and intelligence gathering.
